Best group entertainment in London?

Q) I am heading into London with family friends on Friday and I can't think of anything to do. I lived there for 9years (moved now) and I've done all the usual stuff. There are 9 of us, two adults, 7 children (age 9-17) and we're all starting at Liverpool street station. Any ideas would be very welcome but we have a low budget.

A) Try www.londontown.com

What's good to do in London for Corporate entertainment?

A) Depends what kind of thing you want to do. Is it a meal etc.? There is a really good book (and also website) called Square Meal - very useful. However, there are lots of options of what to do, go to a sporting event (horse racing, football, F1 grand prix), the theatre, a meal, the London Eye, hire a venue and go all out (catering needs to be thought of, as does drink).

things to do in London at the weekend?

Q) I'm heading into London at the weekend with 8 friends but stuck for afternoon entertainment. We were due to book Urban Golf (indoor computerised golf) but they're full. ANy ideas on anything similar-ish basically, something fun that everyone can participate in. Just needs to be in central london - ideally near soho/mayfair ut not too fussed. thanks

A) Do the sights- i know it sounds corny but how much do you really know about England, and London in particular? Other ideas; London eye is near westminister, so is namco world, and also the tate modern. The big super cinema is also down that way, and there are plenty of great pubs and restaurants in soho and covent garden. Enjoy yourself!

Should London declare itself an independent state 2 ?

Q) For those of you quoting economics back at me can you please take the trouble to learn some first. This is the information age and London produces high value information services of all kinds - not just finance but law, media, entertainment, the arts, design, medical and scientific research of all kinds. These high value information services far out weigh the value of physical goods like computer chips or food which are now merely commodities.

A) No.

kensington, london.?

Q) i am off to london for the weekend next week and am staying in a hotel in kensington. will i need to get on the tube to visit any sights or can i get around on foot? also can you recommend something for night time entertainment apart from shows?

A) From Kensington there will be some places that you can easily get to on foot (eg Kensington Palace, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, V&A Museum, Royal Albert Hall). But you will need to cross Hyde Park to get to the main sights in the city centre (eg Oxford Street, Regent Street, Trafalgar Square, London Eye etc) so you will probably need to get a tube or a bus. Some of the other sights are on the other side of the city centre from Kensington (eg Tower Bridge, Tower of London, St Pauls, Shakespeare's Globe etc) so you will definitely need transport out to those places. My suggestion would be to get a day pass which covers travel on the tube, buses, the DLR and I think it even covers some ferries. You will probably only need a zone 1 day pass (which I think is less than £5). There is of course always the taxi option but London taxis are pricey, especially since cars/taxis often can't go the most direct route between places because of one way streets etc (eg I get a London taxi home each night and, while it's a half hour walk, the fares are usually £15-20). Taxis and buses can also take a while if there is a lot of traffic but the tube is underground so obviously not subject to traffic in the same way. The most useful transport map for visitors is http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/cen_bus.pdf as it shows you how to get to the main tourist attractions. You need to read this map in conjunction with the tube map (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/colourmap.pdf) though because it only shows you stations and sometimes in London stations can be quite close to each other yet they can be hard to get between because they're on a different tube line.

London, 1850 food and entertainment?

Q) What are some foods popular in London 1850? Meaning what did a family typically eat? Also, what did people in London in 1850 do for entertainment?

A) For foods and recipes, see The Book of Household Management by Isabella Beeton, circa 1860 but still following the customs of the earlier decade. Free online for at http://etext.library.adelaide.edu.au/b/beeton/isabella/household/. Oysters were very cheap. French foods considered very fashionable (altho the English were always at war with the French, go figure). Lots of drinking wine, gin and rum for the men. Women were supposed to drink only slightly spiked fruit juices (but I'm sure behind closed doors that all changed.) Dinners had a least 3 courses (for the middle class). Fish and chips were just getting popular for the poor. Entertainment for the family circle included reading aloud to others, singing accompanied by piano, women did needlework, men read books, a very quiet situation. Social events centered on dancing and dining at select balls. Very restricted for the women. Men had clubs that they would socialize at, drinking and gambling the night away. More scandalous activities for the guys were music halls and theatre, which was a kind of bawdy vaudeville with women dressed as men (showing off their legs... gasp!). Children were not included in any evening recreation outside of the home.
